James Gunn’s Suicide Squad reboot to feature Harley Quinn after all

Wait a minute puddin.’ Is she or isn’t she part of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad? That was the question, but not anymore. Task Force X still has their Harley Quinn.

There’s no doubt that Harley Quinn is one of the most recognizable faces in all of comics. Warner Bros hasn’t held back any punches when it comes to featuring Harley in their DC Extended Universe.

Warner Bros.’ plans for Harley Quinn include multiple appearances. Her popularity skyrocketed following her live-action movie debut in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. Ayer’s Suicide Squad became a box office success and a thorn in critics sides. Nevertheless, Margot Robbie’s looks and performance were ripped straight from the pages of DC Comics.

In fact, the DCEU’s Harley inspired the comics to change up her look. Harley has since become one of the most beloved heroes in the DCEU, despite having just one appearance.

James Gunn has taken over Suicide Squad with plans of a “mostly new cast.” Unfortunately, despite Harley’s popularity, early reports didn’t include her in Gunn’s vision. However, according to Forbes’ Mark Hughes, those reports are actually incorrect:

More from Movies

"“[Hughes has] learned from sources close to production that in fact, the information about Harley Quinn being absent from the new Suicide Squad movie is no longer up to date — she is indeed expected to appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.”"

It’s a smart move by Walter Hamada and Warner Bros to retain Harley Quinn’s services for Gunn’s Suicide Squad. For starters, because of the combination of Robbie’s star power and Harley’s popularity — they automatically attract viewers in seats.

Moreover, the addition of Harley means more of the original cast could return. Deadshot, played by Will Smith, is one of those characters who could return. Smith’s depiction was fantastic, and the chemistry between him and Robbie lived up to lofty expectations.

Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller is another amazing character that makes sense for Gunn’s film. In the comics ,Waller and Harley interact with one another regularly. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see that dynamic in the first movie.

Additionally, there’s the lackluster depiction that limited Harley to glorified eye candy, as opposed the kick-butt leader she is in the pages of DC Comics’ Suicide Squad.

dark. Next. Jared Leto's Joker not expected to return

With the mostly new faces expected to appear in Gunn’s Suicide Squad, it’s nice to know Harley Quinn isn’t being replaced. But before rejoining Task Force X, Harley will show up on Feb. 7, 2020, emancipated from Joker, in Birds of Prey.
