Aquaman sequel finds its release date in 2022
By Scott Brown
Looks like Warner Bros. is keen on dominating the Christmas season yet again with an announcement that the Aquaman sequel will be released during that timeframe in 2022.
As reported on by Deadline, the sequel to the smash hit that was Aquaman, makes its way into theaters on Dec. 16, 2022. As of right, the sequel has very little competition with the only other film slated for that day is an untitled live-action film from Disney and an untitled animated film from Illumination on Wednesday the 21st. Even though this is the same release window as Aquaman, the sequel looks to be going up against not much in the way of competition, unlike the first film which opened around the same time as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Bumblebee, and Mary Poppins Returns.
Several details regarding the Aquaman franchise have been announced recently as well. David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick was announced as the writer of the sequel earlier this month and a spin-off film based around The Trench was also announced recently. With the massive success of Aquaman, which made over a billion dollars at the box office, it’s very unsurprising that Warner Bros. wants to move forward with more from this world, but if the release date of the sequel indicates anything, it means that they have learned from mistakes like Suicide Squad and are giving their team enough time to do it right.
As of right now, no plot details have emerged regarding the sequel, but if the post-credits in Aquaman is anything to go off of, it will focus on Black Manta’s search for vengeance against Arthur Curry. With Stephen Shin also involved, this could mean the film is based on the arc “The Others” written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ivan Reis.
This arc focuses on a team that Aquaman was a member of when he was younger and before he joined the Justice League, with Black Manta hunting them down and killing them. It would stay in line with Jason Momoa’s Aquaman portrayal and open up the universe even more. At this time, it’s just speculation though.
The Aquaman sequel is being written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and produced by James Wan and Peter Safran. It is scheduled to be released on Dec. 16, 2022.
