The new trailer for Dark Phoenix shows Jean Grey embracing her new powers and taking down anything that stands in her way.

In 2006, Fox brought Marvel’s seminal “Dark Phoenix” storyline to life with X-Men: The Last Stand. Unfortunately, the film failed to meet fans’ expectations, and it ended up becoming one of the most controversial comic book adaptations of all time. Now, more than a decade later, Fox is taking another crack at Jean Grey’s villainous alter-ego with the appropriately-titled Dark Phoenix.

The upcoming movie, which appears to be Fox’s second-to-last X-Men installment before Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s assets is complete, puts Charles Xavier’s merry team of mutants in the ‘90s. Following the events of X-Men: Apocalypse, Jean Grey, Scott Summers, Storm and the rest of their teammates are now embraced as heroes by the general public, and they’re tasked with one challenging mission after another.

During a rescue mission in space, the X-Men are hit by a solar flare. This unexpected occurrence awakens the Dark Phoenix force inside Jean Grey, turning her into an unstable powerhouse and thus, a big problem for her teammates. The story sounds fascinating, and with just a few months until the X-Men burst into theaters once again, Fox has released a second trailer for the film:

Dark Phoenix has been mired in controversy throughout the past few months, after two date changes and numerous rumors pointing to it having a subpar story. Arguably the biggest problem fans had with the movie when the first trailer arrived late last year was that it seemed to hint at the possibility of Dark Phoenix following a similar story structure to the much-maligned The Last Stand.

While this new trailer still includes some grounded elements, it does feature more stylized action sequences than the first. The most interesting element is how Jean Grey’s new powers will affect her teammates. And it even appears that one particular teammate has met their demise at Jean’s hands. So far, it’s clear that fans should expect a very different experience than the one offered by Fox’s first attempt at the “Dark Phoenix” storyline.

For one, Dark Phoenix seems to be much more fantastical given Jessica Chastain’s cosmic-based villain and the inclusion of Magneto’s Genosha, a haven for mutants that has long been a staple of the X-Men’s comic book lore. Overall, Dark Phoenix promises to be a fun adventure in the X-Men universe.

With the Disney-Fox deal expected to close soon, let’s hope the movie delivers a satisfying conclusion to the decades-long franchise. While we wait for the film to arrive in theaters, take a look at its official synopsis:

"“In ‘Dark Phoenix,’ the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite – not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.”"

Dark Phoenix opens on June 7, 2019.
