19. Betty Arrives Home To Find Alice Cleaning Up Blood

Episode: “Chapter Twenty-Five: The Wicked and the Divine” (Season 2, Episode 12)

The Coopers have undoubtedly walked the fine line of moral ambiguity on more than one occasion, but they never really crossed it until the middle of the second season. Their descent started with the arrival of Betty’s brother-but-secretly-half-brother-but-not-really-her-brother-at-all Chic, who made his presence felt when Riverdale’s Nancy Drew went looking for her long-lost sibling.

Following the imposter’s insertion into the Cooper clan, one of the shady figures from his past ended up at Alice’s front door – a moment that led us to suspect that something bad was going to happen. However, nothing could have prepared us (or Betty!) for the sight before us when we returned to the Cooper household moments later.

As Betty entered the seemingly empty house, we all waited to see what kind of dire situation this drug dealer had Alice and Chic in – a worry that seemingly became a reality when we saw a large puddle of blood on the floor. But in a shocking turn of events, we then saw Alice on her hands and knees scrubbing up the bloodstains.

As it turned out, Chic attacked and killed the man before he could do something terrible to Alice, leaving the upstanding pillars of the community to clean up the blood before disposing of the dead body.

The sight of Alice scrubbing up the blood in a relatively nonchalant fashion, like it was any other menial domestic task, was disturbing to say the least, and it highlighted just how far she was willing to go to protect her children. In addition, it proved to be a pivotal moment in the character’s journey that would ultimately play a major role in her Season 3 arc.
