Pretty Little Liars alumna Lucy Hale starring as Katy Keene in Riverdale spinoff.

Lucy Hale will be portraying title character Katy Keene in the pilot for the Riverdale spinoff series of the same name likely heading to The CW soon.

Besides Hale, the only other character confirmed for the show is Riverdale regular Josie McCoy (Ashleigh Murray), who left her band, Josie and the Pussycats, to embark on a solo career.

The show will follow aspiring fashion designer Katy, singer/songwriter Josie and two of their friends, as they try to carve a niche in their respective fields (stage acting, singing and fashion design) in the New York City fine arts scene.

Hale’s casting was first reported by Deadline, which mentions that Katy is currently working as a personal shopper in a department store in order to pay rent, while she waits for her big break.

In the comics, Katy Keene has often been a model, even leading her own series for a short time in the 1950s. However, her appearances in the Archie Comics world have been sporadic instead of becoming a regular part of the ensemble.

Hale is most well known for her main role as Aria Montgomery in the ABC Family/Freeform drama Pretty Little Liars, though she also had a main role as the title character’s sister Bianca Sommers in the short-lived 2007 NBC reboot of 1970s series Bionic Woman.

The show is being described as a “musical dramedy” and will be produced by Riverdale creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schecter and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater.

Aguirre-Sacasa and Michael Grassi (Supergirl) wrote the pilot, which was directed by Maggie Kiley, who has also directed three episodes of Riverdale and two episodes of its spinoff The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, along with The Gifted episode “meMento.”
