Marvel’s Black Widow film has found a new cast member in up-and-coming actress Florence Pugh.

Marvel’s Black Widow is one of the known (but not officially announced) projects that will arrive in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Aside from the returning Scarlett Johansson, there have only been rumors regarding the cast. But it seems the project has found another star in the form of an up-and-comer.

Variety has learned that Florence Pugh has been cast in Marvel’s Black Widow. According to the trade, the young actress has been in Marvel’s sights for a while now. The studio did, however, op the role to other actresses like Saoirse Ronan at the beginning of the year. The focus then shifted back to Pugh after her well-received performance in Fighting with My Family.

THR also provided a few, small details about Pugh’s role. She’ll reportedly play a spy with a skill set that’s equal to Natasha Romanoff’s. The character may also prove to be the titular heroine’s moral opposite. Pugh will join Scarlett Johansson in a film that will be directed by Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland and penned by Jac Schaeffer and Ned Benson.

As a relative newcomer, Pugh hasn’t had too many high-profile projects. Before her breakthrough performance in Fighting with My Family, she appeared in films like The Falling and Lady Macbeth, with her first blockbuster being Liam Neeson’s The Commuter. She will also appear in Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated adaptation of Little Women.

With production expected to begin sometime this year, it’s safe to assume that the cast of Black Widow will continue to grow in the coming months. A-list actors like Rachel Weisz and Andre Holland are rumored to be attached. Time will tell who else joins the cast, but right now, this is shaping up to be an interesting project.
