Captain Marvel sequels could take place in the past

Captain Marvel may enter the present day in Avengers: Endgame, but her future solo adventures could still be set in the past. Spoilers for Captain Marvel lie ahead.

Following her ’90s-set, solo debut, Carol Danvers will arrive in the present during the events of Avengers: Endgame. This would make it easy for fans to assume that a Captain Marvel sequel would be contemporary. But new comments from Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige suggest this may not be the case.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Feige expressed his enthusiasm about possibly telling more of Carol Danvers’ story in the past. Based on the first film’s ending, the door was seemingly left open for more adventures set in this section of the timeline:

"“Yeah. I mean, I think one of the things that’s fun to us about the timeline of this film and the potential of future stories with these characters is there’s a great past, not just of Mar-Vell, but of the entire Skrull/Kree conflict and also this gap of history between when Carol Danvers flew off with Talos at the end, spoiler, and when she arrives with the Avengers.”"

The Marvel producer also mentioned that the studio’s goal was to give Danvers her own section in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which could lead to understanding where she’s been during the past two decades or so:

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

"“We wanted to give her her own corner of the universe, her own mythology. While we’re not specific about this in the movie, there’s potential to understand where has she been this whole time? Why haven’t we seen her yet? The answer is revealed and hinted at in this movie as she was dealing with a colossal, universal conflict in another section of the MCU.”"

Captain Marvel certainly left several story points unresolved in the past. The biggest one is arguably her mission to find the Skrulls a new home. It would be wise to assume that it took some time for Danvers to find them a home, if she did at all. This task in itself could have taken years.

The other loose end is Danvers’ conflict with the Kree, particularly Yon-Rogg’s Starforce and the Kree Supreme Intelligence. Before sending him back to Hala, Carol told Yon-Rogg to warn the Supreme Intelligence of her return. A sequel could possibly deal with her newly-formed vendetta against her former comrades.

Both of these loose ends could also be wrapped up after her return in the present, as well. By the time she returns, Danvers could still be assisting the Skrulls, while also planning her strategy to defeat the Kree. There’s no telling what direction Marvel will take but, when it comes to the Captain Marvel franchise, the sky’s the limit.
