The late great Stan Lee will make his final big screen appearance in Avengers: Endgame.

Stan Lee forged a storied and extensive legacy that spanned more than 50 years. Best known for creating Marvel characters like Spider-Man and the X-Men, the writer also left a mark on television and film through his famous (and numerous) cameos. With his passing, most knew there wouldn’t be too many more of them, but we now know for sure where his final cameo will be seen.

Avengers: Endgame co-director Joe Russo, while speaking to press in India, confirmed that Endgame will feature Lee’s last cameo. Earlier rumors stated it would happen in this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. But Russo, who referred to the sequel as Homecoming, said Lee’s health was already in decline when it began production:

"“I believe that his final cameo is in Endgame. I don’t remember if he was well enough to do the cameo in Homecoming or not”."

So far, Lee has already made a few posthumous cameos, including memorable appearances in last year’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and more recently, Captain Marvel. The latter also included a special tribute to the late comics writer in its opening credits. It’s also been confirmed that Fox’s Dark Phoenix, will honor Lee, as well.

Stan Lee’s cameos have been a staple in superhero television and film for decades, beginning with the 1989 television film, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk, in which he played a jury foreman. From there, he cameoed in various shows and films (both live-action and animated), along with video games, music videos and theme park rides. Over time, Lee began to dub himself the “King of Cameos,” a title fans also began to use when referring to him.

With Avengers: Endgame set to close out this 22-film sage in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s somewhat fitting that it would feature Lee’s final cameo. Knowing that it’ll be the last time fans see his smiling face on the big screen is very bittersweet. Still, he leaves behind plenty of cinematic memories that will undoubtedly be enjoyed for years to come.
