Joker official poster released, trailer arrives tomorrow

Director Todd Phillips shared the first official poster for Joker, and announced the teaser trailer will drop tomorrow.

Rumors of a solo Joker movie began to pop back in 2017, and it was finally confirmed in July 2018 with the casting of Joaquin Phoenix as the Clown Prince of Crime. While DC’s Extended Universe goes through some major changes, Joker  has no connection with it, so Phoenix’s role will not affect Jared Leto’s version of the character.

Production began in September and the first look at Joaquin Phoenix on set quickly made its way to the internet, with director Todd Phillips eventually sharing what would be the first official look at Phoenix in full Joker mode. Since then, set photos and videos have “leaked”, with Phillips sharing a few on-set looks, but nothing official had been released, until now.

Via his Instagram account, Todd Phillips shared the first official poster for Joker, but even more exciting than that is the reveal that the teaser trailer will arrive tomorrow (April 3). The poster gives a hint of the tone of the movie, with a very theatrical Joaquin Phoenix in full Joker make-up (is that blood on his chin?), a dark, foggy background, and the tagline “Put on a happy face”. The poster was subsequently shared on the film’s official Twitter account:

Plot details are scarce, but what we do know is that it will be loosely based on Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke, meaning we will see a Joker that quits his job as a lab assistant to become a stand-up comedian, all to support his pregnant wife (played by Zazie Beetz). But things take a not-so-good turn ,and he ends up helping a group of mobsters known as the Red Hood Gang.

And then there’s Batman, of course. When the heist doesn’t go as planned, the Joker falls into a chemical vat and comes out disfigured. Add the death of his wife and child, and you have the recipe to create an unforgettable villain. It seems unlikely that the movie will go on the “chemical vat” route, but life’s full of surprises.

As mentioned above, plot details have been kept under wraps, so the release of a teaser trailer is extra exciting for fans, as we will not only get to see this new Joker in action but we will (hopefully) get some hints about where the story will go.
