Shazam! appears to be headed for a strong opening weekend at the box office.

Shazam! is finally here! The film raked in close to $6 million alone from Thursday night previews, but how does the film expect to do for the weekend? Spoiler alert, it looks to be number one!

Shazam‘s Competition

Only two major motion pictures with a wide release are opening this weekend. The first is the new Pet Sematary, which is based on Stephen King’s legendary novel, and is also a remake of the 1989 horror film. The second is The Best of Enemies, a historical drama about civil rights. Pet Sematary looks to be taking the number two spot. From the beginning, people have been less than open to this film. One, it’s a remake, so why tarnish the original. We don’t need more remakes. At least, that is the usual narrative people go with. The Best of Enemies is not carrying any huge mainstream appeal behind it. Historical films rarely light up swaths of audience, unless a big name director is behind it and it’s some kind of war/battle epic like a WWII film or Gladiator.

Shazam! looks to be opening at the number one spot. It will knock Tim Burton’s Dumbo down to the third peg. Part of this is thanks to Pet Sematary and the lack of appeal for Burton’s film. Everyone is high on superheroes right now, and they only want more. A kid who turns into a superhero? Well that’s new! Plus, this is Shazam’s first big-screen appearance for fans out there. The number two and three spots are placeholders for remakes. Fair to say, originality is part of the key for Shazam! most likely finishing number one!

Shazam‘s Weekend Gross

Estimates point to Shazam! making roughly $48 million, to as high as $50 million. This does take into account its Thursday night previews and the $3.3 million it made in the late March special screenings. Ready Player One opened in late March last year, heading into the first weekend of April. Shazam! already looks to be out-pacing that film. In fact, Shazam! will probably break into the top ten opening weekends of April of all time. Fandango.com reports that Shazam! is out-pacing last year’s Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Who knew a DC property could outpace a property like Spider-Man! The IMDB.com page data is also showing that Shazam! is pacing behind Marvel’s two Ant-Man films.

One cannot help but mention that the film is tracking to have the lowest opening weekend for a DCEU film. In fact, each film after Batman v. Superman has a lower opening with each installment. Aquaman brought in roughly $67 million. Will this be an ongoing trend? The last DCEU film to have a nine-digit opening weekend was Wonder Woman in 2017. With this lighter tone that some audiences are attracted to, perhaps both Aquaman and Shazam! will bring in more for the next round of movies. Despite the remake baggage, Pet Sematary is also trending quite well. No doubt, the film rocks and will go on to be a success!
