Viola Davis will return as Amanda Waller in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad

Viola Davis will reprise her role as the cold-blooded government agent, Amanda Waller, in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Warner Bros. and DC Film’s The Suicide Squad has been gaining a lot of momentum as of late. With a director in James Gunn and a September production start date, things are finally moving on the project. The cast is also starting to grow, and according to a new report, a fan-favorite character is making a comeback.
TheWrap reports that Viola Davis will reprise her role as Amanda Waller in The Suicide Squad. As of right now, neither Warner Bros. or Davis’ reps have commented on the news. This would make Davis the third returning cast member from the original film, following Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang). She’ll also join new cast member Idris Elba, who is replacing Will Smith as Deadshot.
The Suicide Squad won’t exactly be a sequel to David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, as the film has been described as a “soft reboot” of the franchise. As a result, the project will include mostly new characters, along with a few returning veterans.

Anyone who has read Suicide Squad comics knows Amanda Waller plays a key role in the creation and subsequent management of Task Force X. The idea of using supervillains to perform covert missions is her brainchild. This fact paired with the positive reception to Viola Davis’ performance is more than enough of a reason to bring the character back.
Despite the mostly positive reception to Davis’ take on Waller, many were disappointed with how little she was given to do. Waller began the film with a firm presence, but was gradually relegated to the background.
Hopefully, James Gunn can give the shady, government official a meatier role and better utilize Davis’ acting abilities. The Suicide Squad is slated to hit theaters in 2021.
