The Russos are taking a break from Marvel after Avengers: Endgame, but they would return if they could direct a Secret Wars movie.

Having directed four films in the massive franchise, Joe and Anthony Russo have become two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s signature directors. With this, the directing duo will step away from Marvel Studios following Avengers: Endgame. But there is one project that could lure them back to the MCU.

The two confirmed to MTV News that a film adaptation of Secret Wars, the classic crossover event, would draw them back to the studio. Joe Russo feels a particular connection to the story, as it was his first, real experience with event storytelling:

"“I keep saying ‘Secret Wars’ because that was one of the first books that I really fell in love with as a kid, was ‘Secret Wars.’ This notion of like, you know, event storytelling, and I think that’s part of the reason that we gravitate so strongly towards these event films and these ensemble films is that the notion that you can contain so many different characters and so many points of view, and galvanize them around a story point is really compelling to us.”"

This isn’t the first time the Russos have expressed interest in a Secret Wars movie. Last fall, during as special screening of Avengers: Infinity War, they revealed that the fan favorite story arc was on their personal wish list.

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Secret Wars was first published back in 1984 and was written by veteran comics writer Jim Shooter. The series centered on various Marvel heroes and villains being teleported, against their will, to an alien planet by a being known as the Beyonder. Having become interested in the powered beings on Earth, he orders them to fight to the death on his Battleworld, and whoever is victorious will get whatever they desire. The massive story arc featured a wide roster of characters ranging from heroes like Spider-Man and the X-Men to villains like Doctor Doom and Ultron.

The massive story also included several notable moments in Marvel Comics history, such as the introduction of Julie Carpenter, the second character to be Spider-Woman. It also featured the first appearance of Spider-Man’s black suit, which was, of course, later revealed to be an alien symbiote.

With Endgame effectively ending “The Infinity Saga, Secret Wars could be the next overarching MCU story. And based on the number of years it took to build to Infinity War and Endgame, it would be a while before the film actually happens. This would give the Russos plenty of time away from Marvel, before a possible return. There’s no telling if this will all happen, but it’s definitely not out of the realm of possibility.
