Sharkey the Bounty Hunter No. 2 review: Bathroom breaks and gunfire

Sharkey the Bounty Hunter is one cool customer.

Intergalactic bounty hunters have been the subject of numerous stories, from Lobo to Boba Fett. There’s something about the endless possibilities of alien beings to encounter, the awesome weaponry, and the futuristic (and sometimes hunks of junk) spaceships that keeps readers coming back for more. Sharkey the Bounty Hunter, written by auteur Mark Millar, drawn and colored by Simone Bianchi, and lettered by Peter Doherty, with an alternate cover from Skottie Young, hits all the right notes, as it spools out its tale of gritty, comedic, post-Western fugitive tracking.

There’s no task too tough for Sharkey the Bounty Hunter

In the last issue, Sharkey took on a bounty to track down an intergalactic super-terrorist, and acquired a precocious young alien sidekick under the pretense of taking him to some distant relatives. This issue starts out with Sharkey and Extra-Billy, the sidekick, traveling through space to reach Arryd, the planet Sharkey thinks his bounty is on, in Sharkey’s ice cream truck/spaceship, the Snow Cone. (It looks like a Winnebago, and is an excellent callback to Spaceballs.) After some humorous dialogue about bodily functions in zero gravity, they land, and Sharkey leaves Extra-Billy in the Snow Cone while he performs some tracker magic, getting a vision of where his bounty is. He is ambushed by some other bounty hunter, who is holding Extra-Billy hostage. The three of them are quickly ambushed by Big H and his crew, to Sharkey’s consternation.

Sharkey isn’t one to be messed with

Big H and Sharkey used to be partners, before Big H screwed Sharkey over, sending Sharkey down a path of destitution and drug use. Understandably, Sharkey hates Big H, and when he offers to team up with Sharkey to track down the super-terrorist Edra Deering and split the bounty 25/75 with our purple person puncher, you can tell trouble is ahead. Big H makes a bunch of threats, but Sharkey whips out the ol’ shoe laser and incapacitates Big H and one of this crew. Sharkey bluffs his way out of fighting the remaining bounty hunter, and Extra-Billy and he hop back in the Snow Cone and head to Infinitus, which is where Sharkey’s tracker mojo told him Deering would be. He leaves Extra-Billy in a rented room and heads out, only to have Edra Deering, super-terrorist extraordinaire, get the drop on him.

It seems pretty obvious that Extra-Billy, who was instructed to leave their room under no circumstances, will come to Sharkey’s rescue, and then Sharkey will have a newfound respect for his diminutive traveling companion. Or maybe not. Millar plans to work with Netflix to develop this miniseries into a show, so there’s limitless potential for how things will play out. But whatever happens, it should pan out to be a goldmine of hilariousness. 8.9/10, recommended. Let us know what you thought in the comments section below.
