Aquaman’s box office comes to an end: How did it result?
Aquaman ended its run at the box office after three-plus months. How did it perform?
Aquaman ends its box office run as last Thursday. This is of course a huge success for DCEU. How well did the film fare though?
Aquaman‘s Domestic Box Office
Arthur opened to $67.8 million in late December, right before Christmas time. This is one of the smallest opening weekends for the DCEU, until Shazam! Luckily, the film had strong legs, with a multiplier of five. By the end of its run, Aquaman brought in over $335 million. Batman v. Superman got knocked down a peg, with Aquaman now as the second best domestic title in the DCEU. With a release date of December 21, the film made almost $200 million before the New Year.
Aquaman‘s second weekend had a drop of only 23 percent, which is epic. The DCEU titles average a 60 percent second-weekend drop. In only 30 days, the film made it to $300 million, out-pacing or just out-doing others like Man of Steel, Suicide Squad and Justice League. One cannot help but wonder if the film may have fared slightly better at any other time. December is by no means a horrible month for movies. With all the holiday shopping, people have to decide which movie to see and how many times they may see it.

James Wan’s superhero flick grossed over $812 million at the international box office. Jason Momoa has helped DC bring in a new record in international records, being its number one international grossing film. The opening weekend was only $94 million, smaller than other releases from DC Films. Talk about great legs, as this gives the movie a multiplier of nine.
The aquatic origin film truly broke the mold in China, grossing over $298 million. No other DCEU film comes close to this! It was the number one film for three weeks in Brazil, eventually grossing over $36 million. Meanwhile, it was the number one film for four consecutive weeks in Mexico and Spain. In fact, 70 percent of the film’s total gross comes from international receipts. This is by no means a plus. Keep in mind foreign currency can fluctuate around the world. The U.S. dollar might be stronger than some foreign currencies and weaker than others.
At the end of the day Aquaman has a worldwide box office total of $1.147 billion. This the 20th highest grossing film worldwide. Films like The Dark Knight Rises and The Dark Knight fall below this. Even a few entries from Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter are under the heel of this juggernaut. Whoever would have thought that one of the corniest DC characters could make this much money. Not only that, but he is the highest worldwide grossing DCEU film!
