Hellboy reboot flops in first box office return
The Hellboy reboot proved to be a flop in its first weekend at the box office.
Long story short — Hellboy is a flop. We come to the end of the opening weekend of the Hellboy reboot from Neil Marshall, starring David Harbour. Originally, the estimates for the film were okay at best. The highest estimate was $20 million, though many did not see this happening. The lowest possible estimate was $14 million. Average, the film would open with roughly $16.5 million. On Thursday night preview screenings, it brought in $1.38 million. Not too bad.
It comes as no surprise that Shazam! kept the number one spot. Hellboy was expected to take the number two spot. Unfortunately, the new film Little took the next best spot. Estimates had both films tying originally, within the $16 million range. Instead, Little out-grossed Hellboy by $3 million. Ouch. The reboot took in over $12 million for its debut.
Believe it or not, Pet Sematary had a better Saturday than Hellboy. Guillermo del Toro’s movie opened with nearly twice the amount Neil Marshall’s opened with.
Right now the full numbers are not in for its international markets, as into which ones it opened in and how much each made. Sadly, the film brought in a measly $10 million-plus internationally. Some right now are wondering if Hellboy will make it to China, given its paranormal nature and setting. Because of this, is why Suicide Squad did not open over there. Hence, China cannot be a saving grace.
Some may feel it is too soon to be calling the film a flop. On a budget of $50 million, it opens making back barely a quarter of that production budget. No doubt the film will take at least a 50% drop in its second weekend, raking in about $6 million at best. Then the following weekend is Avengers: Endgame which will put everything at the box office to shame! Plus, if numerous international markets combined cannot outgross its domestic box office, that is saying something!
