Spider-Man is one of, if not the, greatest heroes in the history of Marvel Comics. With his unforgettable appearance, his penchant for swinging from webs and the catchy theme tune from his classic animated series that would forever define him, the webslinger has transcended his genre to become a pop-culture icon. This made it all the more unbelievable that an aging Marvel Cinematic Universe had made it so far without introducing him. That is, until they finally did in 2016.

Finding the right Spider-Man was never going to be easy. After all, this was Marvel’s chance to introduce their most famous hero into their greatest accomplishment and, after the high standard set by the two previous (non Marvel Cinematic Universe) live-action Spider-Men, newcomer Tom Holland had a wall to climb (literally!).

Tobey Maguire looked more like Peter Parker than any of us thought possible while Andrew Garfield (though perhaps too attractive to ever be considered a real nerd) personified the character’s nerdy tendencies to perfection. Tom Holland, however, walked the fine line somewhere in between. Though he too is insanely good-looking, it’s easy to overlook Peter’s handsomeness because of how downright goofy he is. He’s got all the genetic gifts to be a high-school “stud” but it’s dressed up underneath all of that dorkishness (that Holland somehow pulls off) and, isn’t that what Peter Parker is essentially all about?

As we saw through his introduction in Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man looked every bit the badass as he leaped and swung his way through the air, but the moment that he started talking, all we could do is cringe at Peter’s insane levels of fanboyishness. This was then carried into his solo adventure, Spider-Man: Homecoming in which we got to see him do it all on his own. However, despite sharing the screen with powerhouse actors like Michael Keaton and Robert Downey Jr., Holland never faltered and proved that, after all this time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe had indeed found a worthy Spider-Man.
