Character: Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel

The latest addition to Marvel’s ever-growing line-up of superheroes, Brie Larson made her debut in March’s ultra-successful Captain Marvel. Gifted as the first woman to headline a superhero movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a lot of debate circulating as to whether Carol Danvers was the right choice to become the first character to do such as thing when Marvel already had an abundance of strong female characters – all of whom were undoubtedly fit for such a tall task. As a result, Marvel needed a Hollywood heavyweight to prove that they had indeed made the right call. Enter Brie Larson.

As the comic fans know, Captain Marvel is similar to Captain America in the sense that she’s one of Marvel Comics’ more hopeful heroes – a trait that came across beautifully in Larson’s portrayal. Not only was she inspiring, the newcomer was also dominant, commanding and powerful at all times – never failing to highlight Captain Marvel’s determination at any given turn.

Make no mistake about it, Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers is exactly what the-powers-that-be at Marvel were looking for. As a result, she introduced the underappreciated female icon to a new audience and, as a result, was responsible for giving the world to a new role model.

While both Carol and Brie still have a long way to go until they reach the incredible heights of some of Marvel’s other, stronger female portrayals, the latter certainly proved herself worthy of taking up this iconic mantle and put herself forward as a strong contender for the leader of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next phase.

Higher, further, faster indeed.
