Uncanny X-Men No. 16, ‘This is Forever’ review: New teammates and a death

A new X-Men team needs a new way of thinking.

Previously, in Uncanny X-Men No. 15, the X-Men went after Hope Summers who that trying to kill a senator with her team, which goes by the terrible acronym team the Mutant Liberation Front (MLF). During this mission, Cyclops is shot in the eye. Thankfully, Dark Beast was able to save his life. Unfortunately, Cyclops can no longer use his optic blast at full power without blowing his head off. This issue ended with Havok showing that Dark Beast took the Warlock virus out of his friends. However, he did put it inside one of Jamie Madrox’s clones. Even when Dark Beast does something good, he ends up still being a jerk.

This issue starts with Captain America taking some of the MLFs into custody. Cap asks Cyclops if this is all of them. He says that he’s heard rumors that he’s harboring Hope Summers, Banshee, and Dark Beast. Cyclops says that’s everyone, but Cap doesn’t believe him. Cyclops tells him that the relationship seems one sided. Especially since he’s taking a risk trusting the American Government to not experiment on his people.  Cap tries to debate it, but Cyclops isn’t hearing it.

After everything that’s going on with mutants, who can blame him? As Cyclops walks away, Havok vents about his issues with him lying to Captain America. After a brief chat, Cyclops agrees that something has to change if they’re going to proceed with the X-Men.

Cyclops gathers all of the X-Men together and tells them how he feels. He brings up that everyone in this room is a leader and that he can’t make the decisions on his own anymore. Cyclops says he’s stepping down as leader of the X-Men. As a team, they decided that things should be put to a vote. They vote (Madrox used two duplicates to vote), and now, the X-Men are democratic leaders. Their first order of business is voting that all past sins be forgiven. Now, Hope and Banshee are part of their team, which is a good thing because their first mission was a tough one.

The X-Men’s first mission with their new system was the Brotherhood of Mutants. Appropriate considering this was one of the original teams’ first major villains. Magento, Pyro, Random, Juggernaut, Avalanche, and Toad lead the charge. The X-Men paired off, fighting the battles they could win (Madrox chasing Toad was hilarious). Magento uses his powers to trap the X-Men and give his typical speech about mutants ruling. But as it turns out, this isn’t Erik Lensherr. It’s his clone, Joseph.

The X-Men came out victorious, but not after Xi’An pointed out that Joseph’s team wasn’t helping mutants. Joseph said he was past that thinking, but she was talking to Juggernaut. He knocked Joseph out and said he wanted to join the X-Men and help them, and did so in a profound way.

The X-Men take a second to breathe, but Kwannon came swooped in and cut Joseph’s head clean off. She said that he would have been used as an excuse to kill mutants if he wasn’t stopped. Before they could have a talk with Kwannon, Dani Moonstar yells and falls to the ground. She tells the X-Men that Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane) is dead.

Next. Marvel Studios should take their time with the X-Men. dark

X-Marks the spot

  • How is Captain America going to react when he finds out Cyclops lied to him? Are we looking at Avengers VS X-Men part 2?
  • Just as Rahne decides to live a normal life, she’s killed. Who’s responsible? How did she die? And how will her teammates react?
  • Will Kwannon be one of the X-Men? They did say that all past sins would be forgiven.
  • How the heck are they going to hide the Juggernaut? He’s not exactly built for stealth.
  • Will Cyclops remain as an equal partner or will he be more of a field leader? What happens when the vote is tied?
  • When will Dark Beast betray them? It’s only a matter of time.
