Spider-Man: Far From Home will end Marvel’s Phase 3

With Avengers: Endgame hitting theaters later this week, this was the film that was assumed to be the end of Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Turns out, that was wrong, and Spider-Man will take the spotlight.

In an interview during a fan event in Shanghai, according to Newsweek, Kevin Feige was asked about Spider-Man: Far from Home in relation to the phase of the MCU that it’s in and he responded, “It’s the end of the third phase.” So, there you have it. Avengers: Endgame will not be the end of the third Phase of the MCU. This also gives confirmation that very little beyond the third phase of the MCU has been officially announced at this point in time.

This is not the first time that the MCU has decided to end a phase on a non-Avengers film either, with Phase 2 ending with Ant-Man rather than Avengers: Age of Ultron. In fact, it seems that this will be the trend moving forward, having the big, epic team film be the penultimate film of the phase, followed by a smaller, more personal story to end the phase. It worked for Phase 2, so there shouldn’t really be much of a problem for it here.

With Feige’s announcement of Spider-Man: Far from Home being the end of Phase 3, it also brings to light the obligatory nature of the Phases for those outside of the production circle. Sure, it’s fun to talk about motifs and themes throughout the various Phases of the MCU, but at the end of the day, Marvel is going to tell the story that they want to tell and the fan emphasis on the Phases may be a bit much.

Post-Spider-Man: Far from Home’s release though, not much has been announced officially other than a Black Panther sequel. Reports say that the Black Widow movie is supposed to begin shooting in June and that a Doctor Strange sequel, as well as a Shang-Chi film, are also being worked on. First though, the MCU has to make it through the ramifications of Avengers: Endgame.
