A troubled nurse falls for the V in Vader-Dark Visions No. 3

The latest issue of Vader-Dark Visions is the most twisted one so far.

Darth Vader is not a good guy. He never was, he never will be, and it’s a stretch to imagine any scenarios where he could have been, not counting the scene when he yeets Emperor Palpatine off the bridge in Return of the Jedi. That being said, people have always been curious to investigate his personal motivations and the way he is seen by others, and Vader-Dark Visions has been doing an amazing job of tackling that concept. The series is going to be five issues of varying perspectives, all focused on post-Anakin Skywalker. Written by Dennis Hallum, drawn by David Lopez and Javi Pina, with colors from Muntsa Vicente and lettering by Joe Caramagna, and a variant cover from Yasmine Putri, the latest issue deals with the dangers of loving a Sith Lord.

Vader-Dark Visions takes a look at forbidden love, and why it’s forbidden

In the last issue, an Imperial officer was so terrified of displeasing Vader that he ended up making things much, much worse for himself in his efforts to not displease Darth Vader, showing how easily he invokes fear in his subordinates. This issue takes a completely different tack; it shows the struggles of an Imperial nurse who has fallen in love with Darth Vader, without ever speaking a single word to him. She fantasizes about touching his armor, removing his mask, and kissing him. When her superior, the doctor, yells at her in front of Vader during an appointment, she imagines Vader clutching her to his body as he Force-chokes the hapless doctor to death. While cleaning the operating room, she comes across a piece of shrapnel, covered in Vader’s blood. She places this in a box with several other Vader-artifacts, and we can immediately tell that she does not have all her marbles. Vader-Dark Visions is truly leading us down a path where nothing good can dwell.

After Vader visits the doctor again, he leaves his cape behind on accident, and the nurse steals it, imagining that he left it specifically for her. The doctor discovers her with the cape and her box of Vader trinkets, and strongly reprimands her, implying that he could save her some trouble and kill her himself. She runs to the trash compactor room and searches for her trinkets, clearly losing her composure, and experiences another fantasy of killing the doctor; this time, she pretends to Force-choke him to death, imagining that she and Vader are an “us.” She decides that there’s no point in dallying around anymore, so she heads to Vader’s private chambers and confesses her love to his unmasked face, proclaiming how beautiful she finds him. He ignites his lightsaber and runs her through, calling the bridge to come remove some garbage from his quarters.

As soon as the story revealed that there was a delusional young lady in love with Darth Vader, the reader should have known that it wouldn’t end well for her. And it didn’t; impaled by a lightsaber is surely not what she thought would happen, but that’s what delusions will get you. Both the saddest and most twisted story in the series thus far, Vader-Dark Visions is doing a fantastic job of giving unusual glimpses into the Sith Lord’s life. 9/10, highly recommended.
