Phil Lord and Chris Miller sign deal to produce Marvel TV universe
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have been hired by Sony Pictures Entertainment to expand their universe of Marvel characters to television.
What are your thoughts on the Tom Hardy-led Venom movie last October? And how do you take Jared Leto conforming to Marvel, playing the role of one of Spidey’s recurring foes, Morbius the Living Vampire? Curious? A little intrigued about Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters (SUMC)? Well, look no further, as the filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have inked a nine-figure deal to produce numerous Marvel properties on TV for Sony.
Lord and Miller have entered a five-year contract with Sony after moving on from 20th Century Fox, which will see the writing, producing and directing pair develop projects centered on characters from the world of Spider-Man. In addition, Lord and Miller, coming off the award-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, were granted the right to produce their own comedy and drama projects for streaming and cable, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lord and Miller will also be able to supervise other writers on their content.
Having called 20th Century Fox Television their home since 2013, the duo parted ways with the studio. Their six-year run included producing shows, such as The Last Man on Earth, Making History and Son of Zorn. 20th TV made no comment regarding the matter. In a joint statement, the two expressed their gratitude to Sony and their excitement about starting their work:

Despite the change, Lord and Miller are still in business with 20th TV, producing two animated series, Bless the Harts (Fox) and Hoops (Netflix). The Sony deal will see the two behind Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 and 22 Jump Street produce shows based on Spidey’s rogues’ gallery and immediate supporting characters, such as Black Cat and Silver Sable, along with the previously mentioned Venom and Morbius.
They will produce them under the Lord Miller Productions banner with former Sony Pictures co-chairman Amy Pascal. Lord Miller and Co. will be overseen by Aubrey Lee, VP of TV development and production.
