Wonder Woman: Charlize Theron was almost Hippolyta
Charlize Theron clarified long-running rumors of if she was offered to play Wonder Woman.
Rumors were floating that Charlize Theron turned down the role of Wonder Woman. Finally she clarified these rumors on the show Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. Turns out Charlize Theron turned down the role of Hippolyta, not Wonder Woman.
Not to bash Theron here, but sensitive much? She feels this is Hollywood’s slap in the face to her, for she is 43 years old, nine years older than Gal Gadot. She is now too old as the lead and must play the mother, hence Hippolyta over Wonder Woman. Yet, she still got lead action role in 2017’s Atomic Blonde. The character and title of that film scream youth.
At the same time Theron has no problem taking on the voice of Morticia Addams, the mother in the upcoming Addams Family film and is playing a mother in the new film Tully. Perhaps she is right and this is a turning point for her, it happens to plenty of people in Hollywood. It is only natural but this does not mean there’s another chance for her. Your thirties are the new twenties and your forties are the new thirties.

Hippolyta can still offer plenty of action and drama. We especially see this in the Wonder Woman film when they defend the beaches. You have her commanding role when they interrogate Steve Trevor. Let’s not forget her scene in Justice League in defending the Mother-box from Steppenwolf and her big escape scene. One cannot help but feel Charlize Theron did not know the character very well, which she does admit to. It is as if she could not help but attach the stereotypical, old, house-mom stereotype to the character of Hippolyta. Yet, all fans know Hippolyta is far from that cliché’.
Part of what went wrong is the pitch to her. They did note there the presence of action in the film but noted the role is not for Wonder Woman but for Wonder Woman’s mom. That’s it? Wonder Woman’s mom? She is more than just that.
In Classic Greek Mythology Hippolyta is the daughter of Ares. Read various DC Comics and other sources, where his stories range so much. We see her battle Heracles, in the Justice League Animated Series she has an affair with Ares. She bestows Wonder Woman with her powers and equipment. She is also the Queen of Amazon, an island of warrior women.
Hippolyta is more than just Wonder Woman’s mother but her queen and teacher. Maybe comic book nerds can be in the casting industry to help sell these roles to actors and actresses.
