DC Comics writer and artist Patrick Gleason has signed a one-in-a-life-time artist exclusive deal with Marvel Comics.

In the comic book industry and the wider publishing sector as a whole, an exclusive contract with a big publisher is a very big deal. In a field that is under hot water due to diminishing returns, steadily declining sales and many staff at these publishers made redundant, the next best trend is what counts. Though a new lick a new gimmick is not what comic fans want or need right now. Enter Patrick Gleason, who has been revealed at the Dallas Fan Expo to have signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Comics.

While Gleason had previously worked for Marvel before, it was a relatively small stint for a 39-page comic for X-Men Unlimited No. 22 back in 1999 before contributing to at least a fair number of issues as a penciller on a title called Noble Causes for Image Comics. Created by Jay Faerber and illustrated by a plethora of various artists’ including Gleason, the series followed the personal lives of a wealthy superhero family called the Nobles. The series concluded with a total of 40 issues between two volumes in spring 2009.

The artists’ first assignment, returning back to Marvel will be art for a short story on The Amazing Spider-Man, starting with No. 25. Not much is currently known about the accurate details of the deal as an exclusive Marvel artist, but do not expect the artist/writer to reap the benefits of let’s say Mark Bagley or Bryan Hitch of yesteryear. In a statement Editor-in-Chief, C.B. Cebulski, he said of Pat:

More from Comics

"“[Pat] and I started our comic book careers together almost two decades ago, and ever since joining Marvel, he’s an artist I’ve been dying to work with here, to have him draw our incredible characters.”“I’m thrilled that the stars have now aligned and Pat’s joined us in the hallowed halls of the House of ideas. Trust me, the contributions he’s going to make to our comics are going to [be] mind-blowing!”"

Gleason’s ‘big break’ in comics had come with the leap to DC Comics in which he illustrated titles such as Aquaman, Green Lantern Corps and New 52 Batman & Robin. His most notable work was on Green Lantern Corps before the 2011 re-launch of DC Comics for the New 52 initiative. Also a writer, Gleason co-wrote the title Superman with frequent collaborator, Peter J. Tomasi, which has been received with high praise as of late. He has also solely written and lent his pencils to the current Rebirth series, Robin: Son of Batman, featuring Damian Wayne.
