Jessica Cruz begins to lose faith in Justice League Odyssey No. 9
By Scott Brown
The Justice League Odyssey have been split in two, Cyborg is separated while Starfire, Azrael, and Jessica are face to face with Blackfire’s army. Spoilers for Justice League Odyssey No. 9 follow.
After discovering his new power to control people with the sound of his voice, Azrael is able to protect the rest of the Justice League Odyssey from being absolutely pulverized by Blackfire’s army and the army of Azrael acolytes. Maybe Darkseid was right to recruit Cyborg, Azrael, and Starfire, and he’s actually on the side of the angels, though. Signs point to no, due to Blackfire’s pleading with her sister through the pain of being forced to act in accordance with Azrael’s newfound power. There’s more there than what’s on the surface.
Across the Ghost Sector though, Cyborg fights off various creatures that Braniac installed to stop intruders from retrieving the parts needed to activate Sepulkore, Darkseid’s life raft. Cyborg eventually gets the device, but not before he’s nearly killed by an anti-matter bomb explosion. After retrieving the device though, his body has seemingly been upgraded, giving him limited boom tube access, which he uses to bring the Justice League’s ship to him.

However, before he’s to do that, the rest of the Justice League begin to make plans with the acolytes of Azrael in order to move forward with their plan to defend the Ghost Sector. As much as Azrael and Starfire are on board with this plan though, Jessica isn’t as thrilled. She was the only one to have been there by accident and seems to be the most objective with their situation. As such, once Cyborg reunites with the team, she begins to act like Batman and think of ways to stop her teammates if she needs to.
Dan Abnett feels like he’s really beginning the story of Justice League Odyssey with this issue. Now that the set-up’s out of the way, the real meat of the story can begin. Some of the mystery feels a bit forced but, regardless, it’s interesting and, at this point, feels unpredictable.

Justice League Odyssey No. 9 finally feels like it’s stepping out of its set-up phase and moving onto the larger story at hand.
