The previous volume of Champions was chronically beset by crossovers. At least a third of the series was involved in some crossover or another over its run. While it is a bit of a shame to see that continue in their current volume, writer Jim Zub has made the most of it so far. He’s produced one of the best issues for Cyclops in years — and ironically done so outside of the X-Men. After years of being painted as a villain, Zub returns the character to his roots as imagined by Stan Lee and Chris Claremont. He is one of Marvel Comics’ best leaders, having fought for a world that hated and feared him since 1963. The X-Men may change over time, but Cyclops is always there.

Something could be said about the folly of Ms. Marvel believing some of the rumors surrounding the adult Cyclops. After all, as a Muslim/Inhuman-American whose brother was once falsely arrested and who has personally thwarted schemes from white supremacists more than once, Kamala should be wary of believing stereotypes about a member of a minority group as constructed by mainstream society. But, she is still a teenager, and such lessons are part of growing up.
