Toyo Harada meets Albert Einstein in The Life and Death of Toyo Harada No. 3
By Monita Mohan
Toyo Harada’s battle with the Angela Vessel reminds him of an encounter with world-famous physicist Albert Einstein in the latest issue of The Life and Death of Toyo Harada.
Toyo Harada, Valiant Comics’ big bad villain, gets a little help from a Nobel Prize winner in The Life and Death of Toyo Harada No. 3. A young Harada is seen psychically visiting Albert Einstein on his deathbed for advice in this issue of the series.
From Harada’s memory, we see that Einstein assumed Harada would be ferrying him to his death, but the bubble burst when Harada’s inner turmoil took over. Einstein was responsible for instigating the creation of the atomic bombs, which would eventually decimate Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the former of which was Harada’s hometown, where he witnessed his mother and everyone he knew burn to their deaths. Harada unintentionally takes Einstein through his memory of Hiroshima, and their delightful encounter turns sour.

In the present, Harada’s recollection of his meeting with Einstein, however, is less to do with sentimentality and more about survival. Ever since the first issue of The Life and Death of Toyo Harada, the Angela Vessel has been intent on killing Harada and aiding his enemies, Rising Spirit, instead. With all out war at Harada’s door, the psiot has to come up with new plans.
Anyone familiar with the Valiant universe is aware that Harada’s back-up plans have back-up plans, and he begins to make strides in countering the Angela Vessel in this issue through a variety of means. But how exactly does Einstein figure into all this?
It all comes down to Einstein’s theories. In The Life and Death of Toyo Harada No. 3, Einstein and Harada discuss energy and matter, and how energy can never be destroyed. Knowing Harada, this theory must have some significance to how he will tackle the Angela Vessel’s treachery.
Given the explosive ending in The Life and Death of Toyo Harada No. 3, it will be interesting to see how Harada has escaped death (or near-death) once again. To find out how these pieces complete the puzzle, Valiant has three more issues scheduled in this series for readers. This is going to be a long wait.
