Has Sabrina cast her usual charms upon the market?

More from Comics

To say that Sabrina The Teenage Witch is one of Archie Comics’ most successful franchises is an understatement. Since 1970, Sabrina has conjured three animated series, two live action TV shows (one of which aired for 7 seasons across two broadcast networks), and three made-for-TV films. That’s more multi media success than The Flash or Green Lantern! And even the often fickle realm of direct market comic sales reacted. The debut issue of Kelly Thompson and Veronica Fish’s mini series sold over 25,300 copies in March. This was enough to make it Archie Comics’ best selling title, as well as the second best selling of Thompson’s comics (behind Captain Marvel).

Seeking to straddle the line between the comedic slapstick of previous incarnations, and the “horror” themed premise behind the more recent Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, the tone is closer to a mainstream “magician” series like Marvel’s Doctor Strange. Sabrina Spellman, the titular teenage witch, lives with her witch-aunties Hilda and Zelda in Greendale. Sabrina’s challenge is to juggle her witch heritage with being a regular teenage girl. This gets no easier when a wendigo appeared!

While the monster attacked Sabrina and her new pal Jessa, she manages to reveal the monster’s true form with a spell. Unfortunately, its true form was exposed as the siblings Radka and Ren, the local “mean girl” and “dashing hunk,” respectively, of Greendale High. Ren is dead weight, while Radka mumbles that she knows more than she’s letting on. It quickly becomes clear that Sabrina isn’t the only kid in town with supernatural secrets, nor that the wendigo was the only monster around!
