Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker returns the Knights of Ren

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will welcome back a group that was glossed over in this franchise’s previous installment.

The difference between JJ Abrams’ The Force Awakens and Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi was stark in the Star Wars film series. Some plot points and characters established in the former were dropped or not highlighted in the latter, including Captain Phasma and Rey’s origins.

A lost element from The Force Awakens was the Knights of Ren — a mysterious group that worked with Kylo Ren, the latest trilogy’s arch-villain. They disappeared in The Last Jedi, nowhere to be found in flashbacks.

However, with Abrams helming The Rise of Skywalker, he officially opted to return the Knights of Ren. This was revealed in Vanity Fair‘s exclusive behind-the-scenes photos — among others — from the set of the closing film to this trilogy.

How will the Knights of Ren be used? That obviously remains unknown, but they were Ren’s henchmen. Maybe more flashbacks of them come into play, or they arrive as main players in the third film’s present-day arc.

Anything to establish these characters that came into play in The Force Awakens. They were mysterious, intriguing figures, but fell as Johnson trimmed part of Abrams’ The Last Jedi cast, before adding his own original figures.

The Knights of Ren will return to the forefront when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker arrives on Dec. 20, 2019. This might not be Abrams’ only trick up his sleeve, so who knows what is in store to end this set of feature fils.
