Birds of Prey is ’90s in the best way,’ which already sounds interesting
Birds of Prey will continue the DCEU’s retooling in 2020, but it will apparently channel one of the most nostalgic decades.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has taken over 2019 with Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame as billion-dollar moneymakers. Spider-Man: Far From Home may follow suit as the first post-Endgame film in July. That should not shove the DC Extended Universe aside, though, which has a bright future, including Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn).
The title is a mouthful, but it is an all-female team-up of Harley Quinn, Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain and Renee Montoya, all from DC Comics lore. They will contest Black Mask.
Aside from the characters, not much else is known about Birds of Prey. However, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, who plays Huntress, told the New York Times it “feels from the ’90s, in the best way.”

"No, but I do a lot of running around and I get to fight some people. I had to train in jiu jitsu, do a little tactical gun training — there’s some shootouts. “Birds of Prey” was the next level up. In “Gemini Man” I’m a D.I.A. [Defense Intelligence Agency] agent who’s been hired to keep an eye on Will Smith, but in “Birds of Prey” I play this assassin who’s been trained since childhood. It’s all women and genuinely funny and weird. It feels from the ’90s, in the best way."
That is a small insight on Birds of Prey, but connected to what she said about it being “funny and weird.” Of course, waiting until the film actually releases — or just a teaser trailer some time down the line — will reveal more of what to expect from the first DC film of 2020, as Wonder Woman 1984 arrives later that year.
Birds of Prey will arrive on Feb. 7, 2020. It features Margot Robbie’s first appearance as Harley Quinn since 2016’s Suicide Squad and the introduction of new characters in this expanding universe. Excitement will only build as promotional material nears and the first teases arrive for this ’90s feels and these heroes in action.
