At Least One Lady Is Ready for the Chase!

More from Comics

The “love quadrangle” between Chase, Gert, Victor, and Van makes for a classic soap opera style romantic subplot. Yet the metaphors behind it in regards to dealing with the past and the future are noteworthy. Chase and Gert did have something magical together, when both were teenagers. But Chase grew up and Gert has grown on, and neither one of them can go back again. Fear of hurting the other or bucking expectations keeps both miserable. While Gert may have figured this out, albeit subconsciously, faster than Chase did may be the best thing for them. They may always be friends, but their time as lovers is behind them. And the fewer “one and only true love” stories out there, the more realistic many readers’ expectations for love may become.

Van quickly makes herself rather endearing. Rowell has wisely sought to introduce new characters to the mix, or at least include previous characters who have ties to some team members. Gib and Doombot represent this the best, but newer characters like Van who don’t have super powers (so far) help keep the cast more “human.” Besides, her rotating part-time schedule may make it easier for Van to tag along on adventures if things turn out that way.
