Scrapped X-Men plans included a younger Wolverine

Director Matthew Vaughn had plans for a younger Wolverine in his X-Men prequel films. Who did he vye for?

Hugh Jackman is the only actor to portray Wolverine in the X-Men Universe that will close with June’s Dark Phoenix. This probably won’t last forever if Marvel Studios has something to say, but that is not a topic until someone is actually cast to play this role now that Disney owns much of Fox’s assets.

There was a point for a younger Wolverine to enter the fray, however, according to First Class director Matthew Vaughn.

In an interview with Coming Soon, Vaughn planned for an X-Men film in the ’70s without Jackman as this classic character. Instead, Tom Hardy was desired for the role, although the Kingsmen director did not allude if this was close or just a thought at the time:

"“When I finished the “Days of Future Past” script with it ready to go, I looked at it and said, “I really think it would be fun to cast Tom Hardy or someone as the young Wolverine and then bring it all together at the end.”"

Hardy has taken two comic book movie roles since, as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises and the titular character in Venom. Both were box office smashes.

A new Wolverine would have taken time to become accustomed to, especially with Jackman’s iconic take on this character. However, at some point down the road, moviegoers will have the chance to see someone else wear Logan’s claws and headline future MCU productions.

The same may happen for other X-Men characters seen over the past two decades, but that won’t come to fruition until plans officially arise for extending the already extensive MCU. Whoever takes the main roles, it will mark a different, rebooted look.
