After Fox’s last stand with Dark Phoenix, Disney will likely look to get their own version of the X-Men in the MCU — here’s a helping hand.

Technically, New Mutants will close the book on Fox’s X-Men franchise. But let’s be real, no one knows if or when it’s going to get released. Plus, New Mutants has a completely different cast of characters.  This is all about the dawn of the X-Men, which started nearly two decades ago. That’s why Dark Phoenix gets the curtain call treatment.

What started with Bryan Singer during the dawn of Y2K will end with director Simon Kinberg. With his team of writers, Ashley Miller, Jane Goldman, and Zack Stentz, he fixed Fox’s original debacle. X-Men: First Class was, at the time, one of the greatest comic book movies ever.

First Class reintroduced some X-Men characters in a prequel that rebooted the franchise. The cast, led by James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Jennifer Lawrence, did an amazing job. However, based on the poor reviews for Dark Phoenix, rebooting the franchise is inevitable.

How Disney plans to introduce the X-Men into the MCU is anyone’s guess. What age range will they opt for? Will there be an origin story? But no matter which direction they take, there are several arcs and characters waiting for adaptation.

For reasons unknown, Fox couldn’t capitalize on some great characters and stories. Characters like Emma Frost and Gambit were wasted. While stories like the “Mutant Massacre” didn’t get told. And the telling of the Morlocks vs. the X-Men missed its mark. There was hope with this new cast, but that’s not happening.

Who Disney cast ultimately depends on what story they want to tell. For some roles, casting actors who are in their mid to late 20s gives them flexibility. And adding actors who aren’t particularly known relieves some pressure.

Hopefully, Disney draws inspiration from the 90s X-Men cartoon, which is arguably the best version of Marvel’s mutants. Disney has done exceptionally well when it comes to casting, so fans shouldn’t worry. With that said, everyone needs a little nudge in the right direction starting with the big bad(s).
