Stephen Lang as Magneto
There’s no replicating or replacing what Michael Fassbender did for Magneto. He gave us a dramatic depiction of an antivillain who has mega fanfare. It’s hard to imagine any other actor playing the younger version of Sir Ian McKellen’s Magneto. That’s over with, and it is time to move forward.
When it came to human/mutant relations, he took a Malcolm X approach to Professor X’s Martin Luther King. Magneto is aggressive and strong, instilling fear in those who stand against him. The original films exploited Magneto and told his story exceptionally well.
Now, it’s time for something a little different. Aside from the intellect that Magneto possessed, his intimidating look equated his raw power. He was the leader of the original Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.
We don’t need another story where Magneto is pseudo working alongside the X-Men. That’ll happen in time. Right now, we need an intimidating, militant revolutionist. We want Magneto, the leader of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, alongside his son (Quicksilver) and daughter (Scarlet Witch).
Stephen Lang can bring a different type of intensity to Magneto, one that makes him feel like a true villain. Based on looks alone, Lang has the intimidation factor. It’s why so many fans wanted him to play Cable before Josh Brolin got the role.
If you want to know what he’ll bring to Magneto, watch him in Avatar and Don’t Breathe. Magneto doesn’t need to be part of every film. On the contrary, his appearance should feel powerful.
