Riri Williams and Nadia Van Dyne team up in Ironheart No. 7

Ironheart No. 7 may draw you in with a zombie invasion but the powerful dynamic between Riri Williams and Nadia Van Dyne is the real appeal.

Based on the cover, it seems like a zombie invasion is the main hook in Ironheart No. 7. While the majority of the issue focuses on that, the strongest part of the story can be found in the dynamic between Riri Williams and Nadia Van Dyne.

“I’m at the forefront of the teen girl super hero lab industry,” Riri rightfully brags when Nadia visits her at Ironheart HQ to get ideas for her own lab. There, the Unstoppable Wasp geeks out over Riri’s impressive collection of technology. Throughout the issue, writer Eve L. Ewing celebrates the two young women, both for their talents as superheroes and for their brilliant minds, which make them two of the smartest characters in the Marvel Universe.

Of course, the duo has to deal with an invasion of brainwashed people. Through witty dialogue, Ewing makes a run-of-the-mill zombie invasion story enjoyable. Riri’s friend Xavier emerges as the unexpected MVP in a team-up between Ironheart and the Wasp. Xavier serves as the de facto zombie expert and it’s clear he gained this knowledge by watching too many zombie movies.

Xavier offers goofy play-by-play analysis as the creatures attack; he tells Nadia, “your classic zombie is a slow shuffler. They kind of amble along. That seems to be what were have here.” Ewing skillfully juxtaposes Xavier’s eager acceptance of the zombies with Riri’s skepticism. When the former suggests these creatures are the cause of the invasion, Riri repeatedly shuts him down. Eventually, Riri realizes that zombies are, in fact, real. Subsequently, along with her friends, she’s able to fight the source of the invasion and the heroes triumph in short order.

Then, Ewing seamlessly sets up the next issue by hinting that, in her continuing quest to take down the Ten Rings, Riri will need help from someone who knows about magic. The cover of the next issue shows that Doctor Strange will come to her aid. With Ironheart No. 7, Ewing smoothly crafts a fun self-contained story while she also progresses the current arc of the series.
