A day after announcing the return of the Justice Society of America, DC confirms that they’re bringing the Legion of Super-Heroes back, too.

In the span of two days, two announcements have drastically altered the DC Universe. According to Chris Arrant of NewsaramaJustice League writer Scott Snyder revealed that the Justice Society of America will return this year. The team is on the cover of Justice League #31, so they could return in that issue or in its predecessor. On its own, that’s an exciting announcement but< the next day, DC announced that Brian Michael Bendis will bring the Legion of Super-Heroes back to the DCU this fall. The return(s) of these popular teams will continue the restoration of the DCU, a process that began in 2016 with DC Universe: Rebirth.

While Snyder will bring the JSA into “Justice Doom War,”  Bendis will use a comparatively self-contained story for the Legion of Super-Heroes. According to Stephen Gerding of CBR, Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium, a two-part miniseries, will lead into a new ongoing series for the fan-favorite team. Gerding writes that Millennium goes on sale September 18 and Bendis will write the miniseries along with the ongoing book.

Beyond simply bringing the team back, Millennium will tie together a number of DC’s notable future timelines. Per Arrant, the miniseries will set the stage “… for a 31st Century future connecting all of DC’s future timelines,” and it will include Tommy Tomorrow, Booster Gold, Kamandi, OMAC and the Legion of Super-Heroes.  DC’s decision to unite its future continuities into one single timeline may polarize fans, but it should excite them, too.

Comic book continuity can inherently be confusing; many of these characters have been around for decades, and constant reboots and retcons can make it hard to keep up. In Millennium, streamlining these disparate timelines into one future could be a helpful step in clarifying the complicated nature of the DCU. Meanwhile, it’ll also be compelling to see DC fully utilize its past, present and future in a more holistic way than what fans have seen since the start of DC Rebirth.
