In Justice League No. 26, the heroes are certainly in crisis.

For the first time in recent memory, comic book fans, particularly those who favor DC, get to see how superheroes prepare for a crisis. Usually, major event stories (Dark Knights: Metal, Justice League: No Justice and practically every major DC crossover) begin at the drop of a hat and most characters deal with them on the fly. There’s something to be said for watching heroes spontaneously adapt to these dire circumstances. But it’s refreshing to see the greatest heroes of the DC Universe proactively get ready for a looming disaster.

Lex Luthor has the Justice League on the verge of a monumental defeat and he’s already turned the masses against them. In the prestigious history of the league, the eve of “Year of the Villain” might be the most appropriate time for the heroes to collect themselves and get ready for the Legion of Doom’s next dastardly deed.

More from Comics

It’s hard not to smile when comic writers fully utilize the impressive universes at their fingertips. James Tynion IV certainly plays with many of the toys at his disposal. Using a meeting at the Hall of Heroes, avid readers receive a number of deep cuts: the vampiric Batman from the Batman & Dracula trilogy and Captain Carrot, in all his glory, are just two examples.

Tynion IV also takes readers on a full tour of the Hall of Justice, which includes a Danger Room-like training room, a conspiracy theory board right out of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and a state-of-the-art laboratory. The tour offers a glimpse of everyone from Kid Flash to Detective Chimp. Mister Terrific, Blue Beetle and Green Arrow also cameo in the issue. Thanks in large point to the inclusion of the DCU’s various corners, Justice League is realizing its full potential now.
