Noah Hawley recently met with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, and he has an update on the status of his Doctor Doom film.

One of the most intriguing projects that was being developed at Fox before their merger with Disney was a Doctor Doom film from Fargo and Legion’s Noah Hawley. When Disney set its sights on Fox’s assets, the film’s status came into question, but new comments from Hawley suggest it could still find life at Marvel Studios.

While promoting the final season of Legion, Hawley revealed to THR that he recently met with Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige. According to Hawley ,the two discussed the various genre elements that could be introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

"“I did sit down with [Marvel Studios’ president] Kevin Feige recently and I said that I look at myself as sort of the Marvel R&D department. I know the genre can do all of these amazing things that [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] is doing, but my feeling is, what else can we do with it? Can we make it surreal? Can we make it musical? Not as a gimmick, but all of these techniques are about putting you into the subjective experience of these characters.”"

Hawley also confirmed that he’s still trying to get his Doctor Doom film made, as he believes there are superhero stories still begging to be told:

"“I wrote a script about Doctor Doom, an antihero story I really like, and we’re still talking about making it. I’m trying to get out from under this movie I made and this last season of Legion, and Fargo is coming back up… but for better or worse, these are the stories we want to hear right now.”"

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Hawley planned for a “kind of Cold War, geopolitical movie” that would present Victor Von Doom as more of an antihero rather than an antagonist. The story focused on a female journalist being invited by Doom to the isolationist country of Latveria. The purpose of the visit would be for her to make the ruler’s message known to the world. With this plot, Hawley aimed to explore the complexities of the character.

Since it was originally reported, the film has experienced its share of starts and stops. As mentioned, work on the project stalled once a Disney/Fox merger began to be discussed. And although a script has been completed, Kevin Feige hasn’t given a clear answer regarding Marvel Studios’ level of interest in the film.

With the Fantastic Four still years away from joining the MCU, a movie centered on Victor Von Doom is probably off the table, for now. Still, it looks like Hawley will continue to do what he can to get the iconic villain back to the big screen.
