Jon Watts believes Spider-Man and Venom can share the screen in a crossover film.

Sony currently has two successful superhero-related properties on its hands, Spider-Man, which is now produced in collaboration with Marvel Studios, and Venom. Although both franchises work on their own, fans still want to see Tom Holland’s web-slinger do battle with Tom Hardy’s symbiote monster. And Spider-Man: Far From Home director Jon Watts thinks the two would do well together.

Watts told ComicBookMovie.com he doesn’t think the two franchises are so different and that bringing the two characters together could lead to something unique:

"“I found Venom to be so funny and I thought Tom Hardy was so great, I don’t know that they are so different.  “I think you put those two Toms together and you’re going to see something pretty special.”"

Comic book fans have enjoyed watching Spider-Man and Venom cross paths since the latter’s first appearance in 1984. In the years that followed, they’ve been involved in various story arcs like “Maximum Carnage” and “Planet of the Symbiotes.”

More from Marvel Cinematic Universe

Inevitably, the desire to see the two together expanded to the big screen, with the characters finally facing off in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Following Sony’s licensing agreement with Marvel Studios, Spider-Man has made a home for himself in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while Venom remains solely with Sony. But following the fans’ reaction to both Holland and Hardy’s interpretations of the characters, audiences want to see them together once more.

The ironclad nature of Sony and Marvel’s agreement prevents Venom from appearing in an MCU film. However, Spider-Man, who contractually still belongs to Sony, could show up in a future Venom film, and it could happen in the future. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has even stated that it’s “likely at some point.”

A number of critics and fans considered the characters’ first cinematic meeting to be underwhelming. This paired with the current success of the two franchises could prompt Sony to use the pair again. Of course, the real question is how Marvel Studios will explain an MCU’s character showing up in Sony’s Marvel Universe.
