Conjure serpents, kisses, and secrets in Sabrina the Teenage Witch No. 3
By Alex Widen
Kelly Thompson Has Mixed Something Magical for Sabrina!
And as Sabrina noted earlier, her life in Greendale is a mixture of genres she never really wanted. She’s stuck in a love triangle between the “safe boy” Harvey and the “bad boy” Ren — both of whom have officially asked her out. She’s also in the middle of a teenage drama, as she’s keeping secrets about the school bully that have nothing to do with magic. Yet she’s also becoming the lead in a horror movie, being chased by monsters at every turn. And unlike similar teen heroines like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or even Nancy Drew, Sabrina doesn’t have a team of partners behind her — or does she?

Writer Kelly Thompson has gone from spearheading a plucky relaunch of Jem & the Holograms at IDW Publishing to having an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics. Yet as good as her work is for the “house of ideas,” it sometimes seems there’s a little extra magic — pun intended — for some of her work for “third party” publishers. Perhaps it is the freedom that some of these publishers allow for re-imagining a franchise from the ground up. Perhaps it’s focusing all that energy into a more limited engagement — this is just a five-issue mini, after all. Or perhaps like any writer, some works are better than others. Regardless, Sabrina has quickly become one of her best books of 2019.
