SDCC 19: Mary Jane Watson to get her own “Amazing” comic series
By Alex Widen
She’s been part of the Spider-Man franchise since 1965; now she gets her very own spin-off! Mary Jane Watson is set to take her cue on the big stage!
Historically one of Marvel Comics’ flagship series, sales on Amazing Spider-Man have picked up relative steam over the past decade. Through thick and thin, it remains one of Marvel’s top sellers – and often its best selling regular ongoing title. As such, the sheer number of spin-offs have increased.
Within recent memory, characters as wide ranging as Miles Morales, Venom, Carnage, and Black Cat, to lesser-known ones like Solo and Prowler, have gotten their own comic series. The Punisher remains the most popular (and enduring) spin-off from this franchise.
However, as revealed at the San Diego Comic Con 2019, longstanding female lead Mary Jane Watson is getting her shot!
Titled Amazing Mary Jane, it is coming hot on the heels of the 60-page 25th issue of Amazing Spider-Man. In it, Mary Jane manages to rescue a rival as well as an entire Broadway audience from Electro – and realizes she wants to return to acting. Unfortunately for Mary Jane, her agent is unintentionally colluding with Mysterio!

Reports by CBR and the Beat reveal that it is a five-issue mini series. Its exact release date is unknown.
Leah Williams, best known for Age Of X-Man: Extremists, War Of The Realms: Giant-Man and Gwenpool Strikes Back, will be writing the series. The penciler is listed as Carlos Gomez, best known for Red Sonja and Uncanny X-Men Annual, with a cover by Humberto Ramos.
The solicitation states that it will cover Mary Jane and her return to Hollywood, which may or may not play a part of Mysterio’s schemes!
There is no telling whether or not DC Comics’ recent decision to give Lois Lane her own twelve issue mini-series had anything to do with this reveal. Thanks to Spider-Man: Far From Home, both Mary Jane and Mysterio remain as popular as ever!
