Spider-Man: Far From Home has surpassed $1 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing Spider-Man film of all time.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has dominated the box office this year, and Spider-Man: Far From Home has been no exception. Now, the Marvel Studios-produced sequel has reached a new milestone for Sony’s superhero saga.

THR and other news outlets report that Spider-Man: Far From Home has officially surpassed the $1 billion mark at the box office. This makes it the first Spider-Man film to have accomplished the feat. It’s also only the second film from Sony to reach this total, following 2012’s Skyfall, which brought in $1.1 billion.

In addition, it’s now the third Marvel Studios film of the year to bring in a total over $1 billion. And with Captain Marvel’s $1.12 billion and Avengers: Endgame’s record-breaking 2.79 billion, Marvel Studios’ total haul for 2019 will likely surpass $5 billion worldwide.

Since Sam Raimi’s original film hit theaters back in 2002, the Spider-Man franchise has been a lucrative venture for Sony. That first movie earned a whopping $821 million, while its sequels grossed $783 and $890 million in 2004 and 2007, respectively. Despite the mixed reception to Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man films, they also earned solid numbers, with the first installment webbing up $757 million and the second bringing in $708 million. And Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first joint-production between Sony and Marvel Studios, finished its run with $880 million.

Not many film franchises have been able to garner the kind of success that Sony’s series or the MCU have achieved. This latest milestone further solidifies the reach of Marvel’s world-famous wall-crawler.

Reports indicated that Marvel Studios’ licensing agreement with Sony would expire if Far From Home didn’t earn $1 billion but, now, the future of the deal seems set. And based on past box office performances, this franchise will probably continue to thrive.
