Avengers: The Russo brothers share their favorite ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame’ scenes

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo open up about their favorite scenes from Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, audiences were treated to plenty of memorable moments. From the Hulk fighting Thanos to Captain America wielding Mjolnir, both films gave fans scenes they won’t easily forget. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo are also fans and, like anyone else, they also have their favorites.
IMDb chatted with the Russos at San Diego Comic-Con last weekend and asked the two about their personal favorite parts of the movies. Anthony revealed that he’s fond of the Endgame scene in which Rocket and Professor Hulk recruit Thor. For him, it’s the humor and relatability that sets it apart:
"“I don’t know if it’s just because it’s the most recent film, but there’s something I love so much about the scene where Rocket and Smart Hulk go to recruit Thor to come on the mission in the film. And then we discover Thor, sort of the condition that he’s been devolving into for the past five years. There’s something that’s so funny, yet human and relatable, about that scene. And I really love what Hemsworth did with the character in that scene. I love that scene.”"

Coincidentally, Joe’s favorite scene also involves Thor. While he’s a fan of Thor getting recruited, he also enjoyed the God of Thunder’s Wakanda entrance in Infinity War, which has since become a fan favorite:
"“I was gonna say that scene, but we’ll mix it up a little bit. I’ll say Thor’s arrival in Wakanda in Infinity War, only because, frankly, everything that happens in that movie, that is the biggest set up — one of the biggest set ups — for what happens at the end.”"
He also enjoys it because of what it means for both Thor and Thanos’ arcs and how they ultimately come to a head when they meet in Wakanda:
"“Because Thor is actually on a hero’s arc in that movie, Thanos is on a hero’s arc in that movie, and that final moment when those two meet and he does not chop his head off, is when it becomes Thanos’ movie and not Thor’s movie. So that arrival scene really helped us create that misdirect for what happened at the end of that movie.”"
Of all the characters in both films, Thor had one of the most complex arcs, which led to him having some of the best scenes. Infinity War gave him several key moments, such as his run-in with the Guardians of the Galaxy and the forging of Stormbreaker. He continued to steal the show in Endgame, which saw him sport a “Lebowski-esque” look and reunite with his late mother, Frigga.
Thor has come a long way in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and not many could have predicted he would have most of the standout scenes in the Russos’ Avengers epics. Hopefully, he can maintain that level of action and humor when he returns to the big screen in Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder in 2021.
