Riverdale: Supergirl’s Sam Witwer cast as Jughead’s teacher
Fellow CW actor Sam Witwer has joined the cast of Riverdale for season four as a creative writing teacher at Jughead’s new prep school.
Last seen on The CW as the nefarious Ben Lockwood, a.k.a Agent Liberty, in Supergirl‘s fourth season, Sam Witwer will be returning to the network this fall on Riverdale as Mr. Chipping, a teacher at the new prep school Jughead will be attending on scholarship, according to TVLine.
Well into writing the “Great American novel” about the horrors of daily life in Riverdale — serial killer dads, drug lord moms, the epic highs and lows of high school football, etc. — Jughead will finally have an actual writing mentor in Mr. Chipping. And he’s not like a regular teacher. He’s a “cool” teacher — and maybe a dangerous one, per the network’s official character description.
"“He recruits Jughead for his seminar, and while he’s eminently inspiring to his students, there’s a darkness hidden far beneath the surface.”"
Looking on the bright side, Jughead will end the year with a new baddie to add to his book… if he survives, that is.
Just kidding, according to Seventeen, series developer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa confirmed at San Diego Comic Con that Jughead is still alive in that flash-forward. But, seriously, where is he then, y’all? Was he disposing of the body of the person that he, Archie, Betty and Veronica maybe — definitely — murdered? (More on that later).
Riverdale will also be flashing back (sort of) to the CW show that was in many ways its predecessor, Gossip Girl. According to ComicBook.com, Cole Sprouse revealed at SDCC that his new school will be our one and only source into the scandalous lives of Riverdale’s elite.
"“Jughead gets whisked away on a scholarship to a very sort of Gossip Girl Upper East Side preppy, pretentious, richy-rich, silver spoon [school], and he’s going to be the new blood.”"
Of course, he’s used to being the new blood by now. This will be his third school in two years, though the culture shock may be particularly jarring this time. Then again, for someone who has the town coroner on speed dial, how scary can a new school and obnoxious classmates really be?
*POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING* Curiously, according to ComicBook.com, Sprouse also said at SDCC that he assumes his new school will serve as “the setting for the flash-forward.” Could Mr. Chipping be the murder (accidental or otherwise) victim?

On a lighter note, also according to ComicBook.com, Aguirre-Sacasa revealed at SDCC that Jug’s prep school, Stonewall, will be a major rival of Riverdale High, and their football teams will face off. So, get ready for those epic highs, Archie!
Although, let’s be real. We don’t really know how good either team is, so the Bulldogs could just as easily be in for some epics lows. What we know for sure is that Jughead won’t be playing… right? Then again, he did become a theater nerd last year, and this is Riverdale, so anything’s possible.
Riverdale will be back in session this fall, with the fourth season premiering on Wednesday October 9 at 8/7c on The CW. How quickly will Jughead start investigating his shady teacher Mr. Chipping? We’ll have to wait and see. But our bet is it won’t be long, and Betty will definitely be on the case, too.
Outside of Witwer’s anti-alien arc on Supergirl, which ended with Lockwood defeated by the Girl of Steel and locked up, he is best known for his work on Smallville, Being Human, Battlestar Galactica and Once Upon a Time.
