Grant Gustin reveals Barry and Iris’ reaction to the change in newspaper headline teased in The Flash Season 5 finale; a change that trips the duo up pretty bad.

As the fifth season of The Flash came to a close, Team Flash was thrown a major curveball when Nora decided to sacrifice herself in order to save those she cares about. Unbeknownst to Barry (Grant Gustin), Iris (Candice Patton) and the rest of Team Flash there was another unexpected occurrence happening.

In setting up for this fall’s Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, the newspaper headline which teased Barry’s disappearance in the Crisis suddenly changed from 2024 to 2019. While Barry and the gang may not have discovered the change before Season 5’s closing hour, it won’t take long for the West-Allens to discover the headline change; a change which is going to throw the duo for quite the loop when Season 6 begins.

"“[The change in the newspaper headline] trips us up, obviously, pretty bad. Iris and Barry are kind of the only ones that know for a while. We don’t know how to tell the team,” The Flash star Grant Gustin previewed of how Barry and Iris will react to the change in the newspaper.“Iris is pretty resolute, strong-willed about it. Barry is a little shaken up when we come back, because it’s right on the heels of losing Nora and neither of them are really dealing with that in the best way,” Gustin continued. “We’re pretty shaken up at the beginning of the season.”"

In addition to being shaken by the change to the newspaper headline and what it might mean for Barry’s future, both Barry and Iris will continue to work through the grief caused by the loss of Nora. This will allow the writers to incorporate more Barry and Iris scenes as Season 6 begins – just not necessarily scenes of the domestic nature.

"“At the beginning, it’s mostly seeing them deal with this tragedy,” Gustin foreshadowed of what’s ahead for the West-Allens as Season 6 begins. “You get a lot of Barry and Iris scenes at the beginning of the season, but it’s not necessarily a domestic type scenes.”“I don’t know what the overall arc is, with both of us all season,” Gustin admitted.  “I do know that Candice’s arc is going to be more heavily focused more into a journalism than it ever has before. We’ll probably see Barry visiting her at work and vice versa, more than what we’ve seen in the past”"
