Could the announcement of the Lobo series hint at Krypton season 3?
The announcement that bounty hunter Lobo would make his live-action debut in Krypton’s second season was surprising. Before the season premiere, however, Syfy announced that he would also get his own series. Could this be a hint that Krypton has already been renewed for Season 3?
Television spin-offs are nothing new. Arrow spawned two of them with The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. However, the Green Arrow needed to prove himself before a universe formed. Since 2012, the Arrowverse has grown like crazy, adding Supergirl and short animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray and Vixen to its line-up as it also prepares to introduce us to Batwoman.
But what about Syfy’s Krypton? Before the premiere of the show’s sophomore season, the announcement was made that showrunner Cameron Welsh would head a new series focused on DC Comics character Lobo.
Lobo (Emmett J. Scanlan) received a stellar introduction when Seg (Cameron Cuffe) and Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos) found themselves stranded on Colu. And judging by a promo dropped for the second half of the season a few weeks back, Lobo is also due to come back. As scary as that might be, the bounty hunter’s debut and the spin-off announcement isn’t far-fetched.
Hints of Krypton’s Future
It’s up in the air if Krypton will get a third season. From our knowledge, the Lobo series is the first spin-off to any of Syfy’s scripted shows. However, unlike the home of the Arrowverse shows, The CW, Syfy doesn’t attract the same number of viewers.

When the Krypton pilot episode aired, they got a surprise with the stats. It warranted a staggering 1.32 million US viewers with a total amount of 2.91 million viewers with the DVR watches.
If Syfy didn’t think the series worked, they would’ve axed it after Season 1 or they’d never have commissioned it past the pilot.
How Lobo Affects The Story So Far
For anyone keeping track, Lobo served as a menace for our heroes as they tried to get back to Krypton. While he hasn’t appeared or gotten mentioned since Adam and Seg’s escape from Colu, it’s safe to say he’s wreaking havoc elsewhere.
After taking Brainiac down a peg, our favourite Kryptonian and Earthling headed back to Krypton to stop Zod (Colin Salmon) from conquering the cosmos. We’re sure he and Lobo would get on well as they both enjoy killing billions of people and conquering planets.
In the promo for the season finale, Lobo re-enters the picture. If the bounty hunter double-crosses our hero, it may ruin Seg’s chances of getting his son back from Brainiac. He may help the new father get Jor back, but villains are devious and say things they won’t do – like not taking over the world or getting someone’s child back.
Could Lobo’s Spin-off Be A Sign That Krypton Will Get Renewed?
When Krypton got renewed last year, the announcement came before the finale aired as the ratings were good enough for an early renewal. Though most shows don’t issue an announcement until after the final episode airs, it’s clear Syfy had enough faith in Cameron Welsh and his team to create not just a second season but a universe based around the world that Krypton had spawned.
We’re going to have to hold our breath and wait and see what happens, but it really wouldn’t make sense if the main show got cancelled with a spin-off in the works. Also, we need to think about the ratings of the other Syfy shows.
Going over the stats of the other scripted show Syfy has in its programming, some of their ratings were just enough to push them over the renewal line. On last check, Krypton ‘s ratings aren’t as expected, but the ratings for the penultimate episode and the finale will add to the overall count, so fingers crossed!
