Jonathan Hickman just changed the the X-Men’s history and future in one issue.

House of X No. 1 debuted, and it ended with Magneto telling representatives of different countries, “You now have new gods.” This was an incredible way to start this series. Issue No. 2 would have to do something special to continue the pace. It’s a good thing Jonathan Hickman is an amazing writer because he did just that.

The end of Powers of X  No. 1 had a moment where a woman sat next to Charles Xavier. While Xavier had no idea who he was, she knew everything about him. This woman told Xavier to read his mind, and he found out who she was. We find out in House of X No. 2 that this was Moira MacTaggert. This name may sound familiar because she was a human woman who helped the X-Men for years — but not anymore. Now, Moira is a mutant with the power of reincarnation.

Every time Moira’s reborn, she has all of her memories from her past life. Because of that, she’s tried to change things. She tried to cure the mutant gene, work with Magneto to help mutants, and even became Apocalypse’s right-hand. During her tenth rebirth, Moira decided to try something new and “break all the rules.”

Maybe the future can’t be changed

During her continuous rebirth, Moira finds something disturbing — no matter what happened, there was going to be a war between humans and mutants. She hoped that this time things would be different. Unfortunately, they won’t be. In Powers of X No. 1, we see the future, and it’s still grim for mutants. It looks like this may mean that there’s nothing the X-Men can do to complete their dream of peaceful coexistence. Maybe it’s time for a change. From the looks of what we’ve seen from the upcoming titles, that change may be coming.

There is a lot going on in the world of the X-Men, and it looks like it starts and finishes with the new development of Moira MacTaggert. There was also a foreboding moment in this recent issue of House of X that should be mentioned. During one of Moira’s lives, Destiny tells her the only way to stop the cycle of rebirth is to die before her mutant powers manifest. Destiny’s ability to see the future may have shown her Moira’s fate, so we could be looking at the death of Moira MacTaggert in the coming months. Stay tuned to find out more about what happens with the X-Men in House of X and Powers of X.
