Marlon Wayans has expressed interest in playing DC Comics’ Plastic Man, but is this a good or bad idea?

You’re hearing this right. Comedic actor Marlon Wayans wants to play DC Comics’ Plastic Man. Where does this come from, you ask? Right now, Wayans is promoting his new film, Sextuplets. During an interview with Screen Rant, he was asked what comic book character he would like to play and, believe it or not, he went all in on Plastic Man. He said:

"“I would love to play Plastic Man, […] I think he works with the comedic skill set that I have, in terms of how I’m physical, I’m bendy. And I think it’d be cool to just do it without… You know, what’s great about Black Panther is he’s a black superhero, right? But sometimes [it’s fun] to just do something. Like, you wouldn’t think Plastic Man was a black guy, but it’s not black – it’s just, he’s plastic. I think it’d be fun for me, because I know I got to add my humor to it. The only two superheroes I ever really wanted to play was Plastic Man and The Mask. Those are the two superhero films I would love to play.”"

This may sound strange to most. Plastic Man is no Batman, Superman or Green Lantern. To put it bluntly, Plastic Man is not much of a force, but that is not a bad thing. Marlon Wayans has a point, though, in that Plastic Man is a comedic character. You think of that first. He is silly, over-the-top and yeah… bendy. You do not think of heroics or anything of substance, but just silliness with Plastic Man. The same goes for his skin color. Sadly, many people hate the idea of an ethnic actor portraying a white character. Even though this is nothing new — Catwoman, Perry White, Harvey Dent etc.

At the same time, is Marlon Wayans funny? There’s no doubt he has his fans. Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in The Hood is something of a cult hit. Scary Movie was a big hit, his role was probably the most beloved. After this film, his career became nothing more but a schlock of parody films like Scary Movie 2 and Fifty Shades of Black. You can, however, find some major acting chops from him in Requiem for a Dream. In other scenarios, he is not playing it for comedy, but his character comes off as straight up annoying, like Snails in Dungeons & Dragons.

Marlon Wayans also has a hand in producing films, as well. He will undoubtedly want a hand in shaping Plastic Man, too. Perhaps there can be some middle ground in him playing Plastic Man and not being given much creative control, if none at all. What do you think?
