Sean Gunn calls the script for The Suicide Squad ‘really good’

GOTG star Sean Gunn, the brother of writer and director James Gunn, has positive thoughts on the script for The Suicide Squad.

Known for his roles as Kirk Gleason from Gilmore Girls and Kraglin, the second-in-command of Yondu in Guardians of the Galaxy and the larger MCU, Sean Gunn, brother of James Gunn, told Comicbook.com that the script for the upcoming The Suicide Squad is actually “really good.”

As many know, James Gunn was hired by Warner Bros. last year to write and direct the soft reboot featuring members of Task Force X after Gavin O’Connor departed over problems with the script. His draft of Suicide Squad was deemed too similar to the anticipated movie Birds of Prey. Gunn had stated that his film will take inspiration from the John Ostrander run from the comics.

His brother Sean is clearly stoked about the production of The Suicide Squad script, though who could blame him? The original writer/director, David Ayer, known for mostly crime dramas, thrillers and war genre films such as Training Day, Harsh Times, Sabotage and Fury, presented moviegoers with the first iteration of the reformed, supervillain team, which was simply titled Suicide Squad. Despite negative reviews and divided audiences, the general consensus is that the picture only added to the mitigation of the DC brand.

THR published a feature back in 2016, which included a source that revealed Ayer had written the script within six weeks and rushed the production. Unfortunately, the end product shows this. So a well thought-out and tight script is prerogative. Sean, who was evasive on whether he would appear in the soft reboot/pseudo sequel said:

"“I know that he’s [James] very excited about shooting and now that I have read the script for it and I will say nothing other than it’s really good. And I know that he’s pretty jazzed about it, so I’m definitely excited to hear what happens next. But they start shooting soon.”"

With filming set to start very soon, the film has a tone that is very black ops military-driven, and the roster is full of underdogs, which are common tropes in Ostrander’s late ’80s and ’90s run. The producer of Aquaman and Shazam! explained that the film will in fact be a total reboot of the franchise. He continued:

"“So it’s The Suicide Squad, and I think people should be extremely excited about it. It’s everything you would hope from a James Gunn script and I think that says a lot and that promises a lot and I know that we will deliver a lot.”"

Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman are set to reprise their roles. They will be without their former lead, as scheduling conflicts deterred Will Smith from returning to his signature role as Deadshot. New additions include Bumblebee star and professional wrestler John Cena, Idris Elba, Ant-Man alum David Dastmalchian, Storm Reid, Daniela Melchior and Flula Borg.

James Gunn is writing the screenplay and directing the picture. Charles Roven, Michael De Luca, Peter Safran and Dan Lin will produce for Atlas Entertainment under the DC Films banner while Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute. Task Force X will meet their “hit” when The Suicide Squad arrives in theaters on August 21, 2021.
