Carol Danvers set to go bad in Captain Marvel No. 12
By Alex Widen
Carol Danvers, one of the Marvel Universe’s greatest heroes, is about to take a serious turn.
Carol Danvers has quickly become Marvel Comics’ titular heroine. Her codename bares the company’s title, after all. But coming this November, Captain Marvel is set to have a brand new outlook on life and her allies on earth — and all of it is bad.
As originally reported by Comic Book Resources (CBR), November’s twelfth issue of Danvers’ solo series will see writer Kelly Thompson and incoming artist Lee Garbett give Carol a new design and motivation. Even Marvel Comics’ editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski issued a comment about the new state of Carol Danvers:
"“As Kelly continues her daring and defining run on Captain Marvel, in this new arc, ‘The Last Avenger,’ she pushes the boundaries even further by taking Carol in a dark… and deadly… new direction.”"
The solicitation for the issue lists the heroic feats that Captain Marvel her performed, before stating that her new mission is to “kill the Avengers.” Considering how many heroes have been on the team, that could easily encompass the Earth. Her costume design is changing to a darker design of crimson and black, complete with an expressionless masked look. This is the first major new costume Danvers has gotten since her now-iconic, reinvigorated look debuted in 2012.
Incoming artist Lee Garbett has a history as a comic book illustrator going back to 2005. Beginning on Dark Mists, the bulk of his work for some time was with DC Comics on titles such as Batgirl, Batman, Midnighter, Outsiders, and Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne. His most notable work for Marvel Comics was Loki: Agent of Asgard in 2014. There is no word if he will be replacing the series’ regular artist, Carmen Carnero, permanently or if this is a temporary assignment.

The current arc of Captain Marvel has seen the heroine begin to lose her powers, just as a brand new heroine named Star arises. To add insult to injury, the press has misunderstood her newfound heritage relating to the Kree empire alongside yet another alien attack to brand her a traitor. Danvers has been drummed out of the Air Force and is attempting to investigate the matter. The plot involves Carol’s old enemy Dr. Minerva, but even she may be a pawn to a grander conspiracy.
Thompson has a history of “dark turns” with some of the heroines she writes. Midway through her run on IDW’s Jem & the Holograms in 2016, she and collaborator Sophie Campbell did “Dark Jem,” which saw the titular band leader and her friends corrupted by an evil computer virus. The question is whether Danvers will be a victim of mind control or if this stems from her own growing doubts and trials with being one of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
