The King of Wakanda will return to the big screen when the Black Panther sequel arrives in 2022.
Black Panther was met with critical and financial success when it hit theaters in 2018 and, as a result, a sequel was inevitable. While Marvel Studios didn’t say much about the project at San Diego Comic-Con, they’ve finally provided some concrete details.
During Disney Studios’ panel at D23, Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige and writer/director Ryan Coogler confirmed that Black Panther 2 will be released on May 6, 2022. In addition, Coogler also revealed that he has completed a treatment for the film:

Recent reports suggested the Marvel sequel was in development, as Feige himself even confirmed about a month ago that Coogler was just starting to conceive the story. This news also matches up with actor Martin Freeman’s belief that the film will shoot in 2021. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps, but what is known is that the film will see most of the principal cast return. We can also expect that Black Panther 2 is just a placeholder title and the actual name will have a subtitle.
Black Panther marked a watershed moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe and film in general, as it featured an African American director and a mostly Black cast. Highly anticipated from the moment it was announced, the film debuted to $242.1 million during its opening weekend. It would eventually go on to finish its theatrical run with a worldwide total of $1.3 billion.
It’s difficult to predict what direction Coogler will take for the story. Many fans have hoped the film will introduce Prince Namor to the MCU. This is based on the rivalry between him and T’Challa in the comics. The wait for the film is going to be long but, with Coogler at the helm, it’s sure to be worth the wait.
